Health Insurance For Missionaries

Insurance for expats and long-term travel.

Here you will find links to carefully selected US-style, international health insurance plans for both short-term and long-term missions. For your (or your mission sponsor's) peace-of-mind, all insurance companies represented here are legally registered in most or all U.S. states. Plus, all insurance plans are offered with my lowest-rate guarantee.

Your First Step Is To Determine The Type Of Coverage You Need.

Initial Question: Do you need Long-Term (Expatriate) or Temporary (Travel) health insurance?

1. Long-Term Health Insurance (Expatriate) This type of insurance is recommended if it is your primary health coverage during an extended mission abroad. This is the most comprehensive and is annually-renewable.

Other terms used to describe this type of coverage are "annual" or "annually-renewable health insurance," "permanent health insurance," and "expatriate major medical insurance."

2. Temporary Health Insurance (Travel from USA) This type of insurance is for sudden and unexpected injury or illness while abroad on a temporary basis. This insurance is not intended as a substitute for comprehensive long-term coverage.

However, there are many circumstances which may call for Temporary health insurance. For example:

Limited budget - Temporary insurance typically costs much less.
•  Medical condition - many people do not qualify (medically) for Long-Term (Expatriate) insurance.
You have insurance in the USA - you have Medicare, Tricare, or other primary coverage upon return to the USA.

Your Next Step Is To Find The Best Contract Wording For Your Needs

Key Concept: The most significant differences in international health insurance are not in the benefits and rates, but rather in the wording of the plan definitions and exclusions by which your insurance benefits are actually paid . . . or not paid!

Once you've determined "Temporary" or "Long-Term" (Expatriate) insurance, go to Consumer Tips. There, you will find both Tips for Long-Term Insurance and Tips for Temporary Insurance.

Because missionaries often have unique needs (such as home country furloughs, budget constraints, etc.), I invite you to contact me directly before you purchase. Attention Churches and other Mission Sponsors: When you pay for health insurance on behalf of others, you accept an important fiduciary obligation, with important legal ramifications. Do it correctly. I can help.
